Dental Implant Placement

Dental Implant Placement

Dental implant placement is a surgery that fits dental implants that act as secure roots to a dental bridge or crown. Depending on your individual need, you may be having multiple implants put in, or you may just be having one. Star28 Dental Clinic offers a range of different forms of implant placements, depending on the issue the patient is facing. If you have a missing or decaying tooth, we can have a look at it and advise the best restorative procedure for you. Image of dental implant being placed.

Why Have a Dental implant?

Dental implants can benefit a patient in a number of ways. If you have a cracked or chipped tooth, you may choose to have an implant for cosmetic reasons. Alternatively, implants can be used after root canal surgery has failed, i.e. become infected, or a tooth has decayed severely. Implants can be used to protect the oral cavity, by replacing infected/diseased teeth.

Procedure

Before the procedure, it is important that our dentist perform a thorough investigation of your oral cavity, to ensure there are no underlying problems that could affect the result of the surgery. We will ask you questions about your medical and dental history, as some patients are at a higher risk of complications than others, i.e. patients who have previously had radiotherapy to the jaw.

We will take x-rays and 3D models of the mouth and jaw, to assess how we will most effectively perform the surgery. Once we have enough information, we will be able to tell you how many different implants you will need, and the treatment plan. The treatment plan will consist of how many appointments you’ll need, and when they’ll be. Patients who require more implants, or have a poorer condition of oral health, may need multiple appointments.

If your jaw is too damaged, soft, or thin in the area that needs a dental implant, a bone graft will need to be inserted. Bone grafting will ensure the implant is solidly placed within the jaw, but can add several months to the treatment plan. Alternatively, if only a small bone graft is needed, it can be done on the day of the dental implant placement.

Using local anesthesia, our dentist will cut open the gum to expose the jawbone, and drill deeply in order to create a sufficient hole for the implant. The implant is placed and needs to be allowed to integrate with the surrounding bone. This will create a solid foundation, or root, for the dental bridge or crown. The abutment, the connector between the implant and the dental bridge/crown, can either be placed during this surgery or in its own appointment.

Our dentist will take a mold of your teeth in order to create a custom-made crown/dental bridge at a dental lab. Until the implant is properly integrated with the bone, and the dental lab has finished creating the synthetic teeth, a temporary bridge will be provided to protect the implants.
