Missing teeth can cause a number of issues when eating and talking, and have a negative effect on a person’s self-esteem. Single tooth implants are a way to replace damaged or missing teeth and restore a smile to its former glory. The titanium implant acts as a tooth root which is fitted with an abutment and finished with a crown on top. Implants are popular for a multitude of reasons. At Star28 Dental Clinic, we offer a variety of restorative procedures, single tooth implants included, and we can help you decide which replacement is best for you.

Causes and Benefits

There are a number of reasons why a tooth may have become impacted and need replacing. A tooth can become chipped or cracked from an injury, such as damage while playing a contact sport. Poor oral health can lead to tooth decay or loose teeth, both of which may lead to an implant being needed. Talk to one of our dentists if you think you may need a tooth replacement.

A single tooth implant has many benefits over other tooth replacement procedures. Some patients prefer them to dental bridges, as bridges need the filing down of the neighboring tooth enamel, in order to function properly. An aspect that draws patients towards implants is their fit within the mouth. Compared to dentures, single tooth implants feel natural, comfortable and strong in the mouth.

Single tooth implants are a permanent option and can last as long as normal teeth, with the maintenance of good oral health. They are a more extensive procedure, compared to other restorative procedures, but they also last longer and can feel better.

Procedure

During your first appointment, our dentist will thoroughly examine your oral cavity to check you are suitable for an implant. They will also ask you questions about your medical history, as some people are unfit for implants, i.e. people who have periodontitis.

Next, our dentist will create a hole for the implant, and place it. They will give you a temporary crown until the bone has grown around the implant. This will give the synthetic tooth its strength and comfortability, as the implant fuses with the jawbone.

The bone will take 2-6 months to fuse properly, and then a minor procedure to uncover the implant and attach the abutment is performed. The abutment acts as a connector between the implant and the crown. Sometimes, it is possible to have the abutment and crown fitted in the same appointment, but you will have to consult with one of our dentists, to check if it would be suitable.

A mold of your teeth will then be taken and sent to a dental lab, so they can make a custom crown that will fit snugly in your mouth. This will be placed at the next appointment and complete the procedure. Our dentists will work out the best treatment plan to get the procedures done as close together as we can and combine them where possible.
